Deborah G. Johnson retired from her formal university duties in 2016. She is currently the Anne Shirley Carter Olsson Professor of Applied Ethics, Emeritus, in the Department of Engineering and Society within the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering. Best known for her work on ethical, social, and policy implications of computer technology and engineering, Deborah has published many books including one of the first textbooks on computer ethics [Computer Ethics, Prentice Hall, 1985] and most recently Engineering Ethics, Contemporary and Enduring Debates [Yale University Press, 2020]. As a collaborative scholar, Johnson has received more than a dozen grants from the National Science Foundation and served in leadership roles in several professional organizations. In recognition of her contributions, Deborah has received several awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Philosophy and Technology (2021), the Covey Award from the International Association for Computing and Philosophy (2018) and the Joseph Weizenbaum Award from the International Society for Ethics and Information Technology (2015). Her most recent writings focus on AI, values, and accountability.
